Encaustic painting is one of the most durable forms of art; some have survived over 2000 years without cracking, flaking, or fading. Wax has several inherent qualities that allow it to withstand the test of time: it is a natural adhesive; preservative; and is moisture, mildew and fungus resistant. Wax paint does not contain solvents or oils and thus will not darken or yellow with age, leaving the painting as fresh as the day it was created.
When displaying your art, do not hang your painting in direct sunlight or cover it with glass. Encaustic art is stable in a temperature range of approximately 40-120°F. Your painting should always appear glossy not dull or hazy. When the painting is at room temperature or cooler (not over 75 degrees F) use a soft 100% lint-free cotton cloth and carefully buff the painting. When the painting is "young" or recently finished, it needs time to cure and harden and may appear to have a matte surface. With time, the curing will occur (it could take up to 6 months) and the painting will keep its buffed polished look. |
